Strengthening Communities: Embedding Social Workers and Paramedics with First Responders
One innovative approach gaining traction to address complex patient cases in the community is embedding social work services with police and fire departments. Social workers bring invaluable expertise in mental health, substance use, homelessness, and family services, and play a crucial role in helping individuals apply for housing vouchers, find and apply for jobs, secure housing, and navigate social security and disability applications. Verdant Health Commission invests in a full-time social worker that supports the Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace Police Departments and also invests in South County Fire’s Community Resource Paramedic (CRP) program.
South County Fire ‘s CRP program aims to address non-emergency EMS calls by identifying the underlying cause and finding alternative solutions. They connect with high utilizers of the EMS system and help them access necessary resources and services, improving overall care and reducing unnecessary emergency calls. The team works collaboratively with patients and their providers to address the underlying problem(s) that caused the patient to access emergency resources in the first place, which is an approach traditional police and fire departments are not trained to do.
The integration of social workers and community paramedics with police and fire represents a transformative approach to public safety. By addressing the root causes of social issues, social workers contribute to more sustainable solutions, easing the burden on law enforcement and emergency services. As we continue to face complex social challenges, the role of social workers and community paramedics in partnership with police and fire drives positive change.
