Screen time and its impact on youth

Do you know how much time kids spend on phones or other devices? What about TV? (The answer is, on average, 6.5 hours per day.) How is this time spent staring at screens impacting their health?

Parenting a teenager today is different than it was 20 or even 10 years ago. Verdant is hosting a community viewing of the documentary film “Screenagers: Growing Up In The Digital Age” with a discussion question-and-answer session to follow led by physicians and licensed mental health counselor Ann Steel on April 18 (see box below for details).

Tech Talk Tuesdays

The filmmaker of the documentary encourages adults to have regular conversations with the kids in their lives about their use of technology, offering a free service to parents, teachers, and other adults who could use some help in getting those conversations started. Each Tuesday, they email conversation starters about social media, research, tech tips and much more to incite a dynamic conversation with your kids or students.

One recent topic was “To Google or not to Google,” and below is an excerpt.

Tech Talk Tuesday #58: Do you interrupt conversation to Google an answer?

How many times have you or your kids pulled out a phone at dinner to quickly get the answer to a question that comes up? Knowledge-on-demand is the norm now but I am concerned it takes away from interesting, deeper conversations and interrupts dialogue. When you don’t have one answer, you are forced to generate your own ideas on the topic. Debate and quandary on a topic spurs imagination.

There are conflicting views on this subject.
