Domestic Violence Awareness Month: A Time for Action and Reflection
Did you know that an average of 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States? That’s more than 12 million people over the course of a single year. Over 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the US have experienced some form of domestic violence in their lifetime including rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is an opportunity to have a conversation about this important issue and show those impacted by domestic violence that they are not alone. You can also show support for survivors by wearing purple on Purple Thursday, October 17. Wearing purple is a symbol of peace, courage, survival, honor, and dedication to ending violence.
The Verdant Health Commission has long supported the mission of Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County (DVSSC). Since 2012, Verdant has partnered with DVSSC to support their prevention education and outreach initiatives. Through this collaboration, DVSSC provides educational programs on teen dating violence and healthy relationships across local schools and communities.
In 2020, DVSSC opened the South County Supportive Services Center. This center serves as a vital resource hub for individuals and families affected by domestic violence. DVSSC also distributes outreach materials, including brochures and flyers, at local libraries, schools, and community centers to ensure that help is accessible to all. By focusing on both immediate safety and long-term empowerment, DVSSC is helping to build stronger, safer communities across South Snohomish County.
As we observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are reminded that the work of organizations like DVSSC is crucial to breaking the cycle of violence and ensuring a brighter future for survivors.
